ok that's understandable. i had to work my way to death and black metal too. just about a year and a half ago. im not even uber deep into them yet.

but here is the song that FINALLY SOLD me on death metal: Behemoth - As Above, So Below

anyway we dont really derail the thread imo. if through this, some people get into metal (or deeper into it) by their own choice, that's awesome.

Interesting use of quotation marks there.
I wonder what you're implying here;
a) You believe every form of music is a derivative of metal, so basicly all music is metal.
b) You don't believe in such a thing as music genres, as metal is the only form of actual music.
c) You have no idea on how to properly use quotation marks.

Regardless of what it might have been; it doesn't make a convincing statement.

CONTINUE LISTENING TO YOUR MUSIC. do not even try to listen to real metal. you cannot handle it. you exist only so metalheads can look down on you. (if everyone was a metalhead, there'd be no one left to make fun of). thank you.
Ugh, the ignorance is overwhelming.
I'm certainly not a metalhead, and I don't belong in any other of those groups you mentioned. I'm just someone who enjoys listening to music, and I don't limit myself to any specific genre.
The following might be hard to digest for you, but it's true;
Your taste in music isn't superior to anyone else, neither is mine, neither is anyone's on this entire earth and beyond. Simple & plain.

To get back on the original topic;
If you're into to soul, the latest Raphael Saadiq album, is really, really incredible.

i disagree completely. one guy's taste can be superior to another guy's taste if the other guy's music sounds ridiculously stupid. (this can be objectively measured)

case in point: this? or THIS.

Well, I like screamo, but I'm not sure if anyone else here even wants to listen to it.

No, it can't be. What may sound ridiculously stupid to you may not sound ridiculously stupid to another. There is no way one guy/girl's taste in music can be "superior" to another guy/girl's, it's just dumb to think that way.
It is relative.

Case in point: I like Saosin, while you think it sounds ridiculously stupid. You like metal, while I think it sounds ridiculously stupid.

Good for you, good for me, but that doesn't mean that my taste in music is superior to yours - it's just different, and you should respect.

A lot of times, when I go to to listen a song I like to able to understand the words, rather than trying to distinguish between "uuughggghghgs" and "raawrs".

I don't even care who you are or what music you like, Kamelot >>>>>>> Saosin. In fact, Kamelot >>>>>> everyone except for RDJ.

EDIT:

OMFG AS A SIDE NOTE. WTF SAOSIN ARE TERRIBLE. Thanks for ruining my ears with that link, they're...wtf....that was....gah.

Never heard of Kamelot before (Haven't really touched Power Metal since Sonata Arctica, who sound really similar). So far pretty decent.

Listen to One Cold Winter's Night, it's a live 2 CD thing, basically the PERFECT Kamelot set list.

I like Kamelot but not so much as for example Vader. Anyway today is my lucky day since I go to Motorhead concert. Anyone still listening those dinosaurs?

You can't objectively measure opinion. For example, I feel that both bands sound ridiculously silly. Except they obviously have at least one fan each.

not all metal has growling, and some good metal doesnt have growls, like Iced Earth. and then there's good growling and bad growling. some good growling is comprehensible. i too hate bad growling. but growling in metal exudes an aura of strength/power/dominance, which appeals to more badass music listeners.

Pendulum - a light Australian drum and bass group (not heavy hardcore drum and bass; more with rock undertones).
Spiderbait
Regina Spektor - just because she's awesome and everyone in the world should listen to her songs at least once in their lifetime.
For some smooth jazz try Miles Davis, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Michael Manring and Herbie Hancock.
Coheed and Cambria for a bit o' nerdy punk/emo
Ben Folds because he's awesome
The Jesus and Mary Chain
you could go oldschool and get some Primitive Radio Gods or The Beta Band
and of course anything by the Dandy Warhols.
Some more to add would be some more Aussie bands - The Butterfly Effect, Cog, Karnivool, Birds of Tokyo, Dead Letter Circus, Eddie Current Suppression Ring. They are some of my favourites.

That should be a good cross section of music taste right?

edit: I'm so glad you liked The Go Team! They're one of my favourite bands!

I just can't resist this thread.

Saosin is horrible, along with all other screamo. It's like trying to metal up emo. Emo is one thing, and I don't really care about emo, but screamo is poser metal. I think that might be one area where I really agree with Cytherea: Metal is a ground of dominance and a bastion of masculinity. (Before anyone gets on my ass about "masculinity" and "femininity" in metal, check out Arch Enemy, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, and Otep.) Metal is no place to cry about the bullies at school that stole your lunch money, it's a place to release anger/hate/disaffection/etc in a constructive way. (Atleast, in mose cases. Sometimes it's less about hate.) I don't care for the emo stuff, cause they're not trying to be metal. They're chillin out elsewhere. But screamo/postcore/bullshit is trying to cry in a metal fashion.

One other thing, I like Kamelot. Only know a few of their songs, but they're good, especially for power metal which I normally stay away from.
